Eternal Silence

Eternal Silence is perhaps Marcus Chen's most deeply felt work — a canvas that does not merely depict quietude, but incarnates it. Standing before the piece, one becomes aware of one's own breathing. The vast ochre and obsidian fields, layered across months of patient application, create a temporal depth that conventional photography cannot capture. This is painting that demands presence.

Created in Chen's Manhattan studio during the winter of 2023, the work emerged from a period of profound reflection on the nature of stillness in urban life. Translucent glazes of burnt umber and prussian blue are built up over an ivory ground, allowing light to penetrate the surface and emerge transformed — just as silence, within noise, carries its own luminosity. The work is signed, dated, and numbered on verso, with full provenance documentation.
